Edinburgh Graveyards

Graveyards here are full of interest. The medieval ones were built in cages like this to stop the body snatchers. There was a roaring trade in bodies for the medical school and the minute a body was buried, often the same night, body snatchers would dig it up and sell it. They could get £7 per corpse.

And of course the Grey Friars church has the famous grey friars bobby and his dog. The bobby died when his dog was only two. The dog sat on his grave and despite many attempts to remove him kept making his way back there. Eventually a local businessman agreed to pay for his food and the dog sat on the grave for 12 years. He is now buried there as well and people who visit the churchyard leave him sticks to play with!
