Rural Finland

We are staying in Orismala which has around 30-50 houses spread over a large area of fields and pine forest. As it is August our host is pickling a bucket of cucumbers and preparing to do 101 things with currants, turnips and beetroot.

Everywhere small farm lots are harvesting grain. Well mostly grain – they also harvest biograss which I will talk about in an energy blog sometime.

Orismala is one of many such villages, each with one or maybe two shops. The major town is Vaasa about 40 minutes away. And just to get things in perspective, Vaasa town and region has a population of 57,000.
Many of the roads are three lane roads; two lanes one way and one the other and to give each direction a turn at two lanes they swop pretty regularly so you are constantly merging and separating lanes. The traffic is extremely light though so it really isn’t a problem unless you get stuck behind a tractor or combine harvester. There are a lot of those in these parts. Enough to create the annual competitions anyway which as it seemed to be the only thing happening this weekend we couldn’t help but attend.

The only other traffic hazard are moose. We haven’t encountered one yet, but on many roads you see moose warnings about every 10km.
